In 2019, my son suffered a serious tibia fracture when he went into a high-speed 50-50 tackle. He was wearing his shin guards.

That led me to research shin guard safety, and what I discovered was shocking.

I learned that a soccer player can kick with up to three times the force needed to break your tibia. Yikes!

Your tibia is one of the most vulnerable bones in your body because it isn't surrounded by muscle tissue. You can feel your bone just beneath the skin.

Prior to 1990 when FIFA made shin guards mandatory, 25% of all serious soccer injuries involved bone fractures. A decade after the rule went into effect, shin guards had helped reduce bone fracture injuries to 10%.
